University of Pittsburgh – Rainbow Alliance

The Rainbow Alliance provides for the needs and interests of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex and Asexual community at Pitt and beyond through advocacy, educational, and social opportunities.

Formed as Gay Student at Pitt around 1974, our organization has undergone dramatic changes since its inception. GSP was originally designed to provide a community for gay students seeking comfort in a time of great uncertainty for the community. Through the HIV scare of the 1980s and increased visibility and progress throughout the 1990s, the Bisexual, Gay, and Lesbian Alliance (BiGALA) made great changes, and in 1997 voted to include the Transgender community within its purview. As such, the organization changed its name to be more inclusive, and to this date the Rainbow Alliance stands as an inclusive organization for all gender and sexual minorities at Pitt, as well as our allies!

We hold at least two events each week: one lounge and one general body meeting. These provide diverse programming options for students of all backgrounds and interests.

Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR)

Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) was founded in 1972 by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) in response to a series of rapes. This group of lawyers, health professionals, and activists believed victims of sexual assault should have expert assistance directly following the commission of the crime. During PAAR’s first two years, the organization was membership- and volunteer-driven, providing only a 24-hour hotline and medical and legal advocacy.

PAAR is one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the U.S., and the only organization in Allegheny County solely devoted to the issue of sexual violence.
